Imagine IT and “Stuck in the Shallow End”
PHASE 4
My main goal of the Imagine IT project is for students to look at the world through an engineering lens. I want students to be conscious that everything around them was made by someone and throughly thought out. Also, I am trying to students to be using technology as a resource and a place to brainstorm ideas. One of the problems that I notice that is mentioned in the book “Stuck in the Shallow End” is the difference between having technology and “staffing” schools with it and actually teaching students what they can do with it. There is only so much students can do with just having a laptop or iPad in there classroom. There is so much that they can explore when a teacher has a deeper knowledge of the actual devices and then there are endless possibilities.
One of the problems that I notice at my school is that students are capable of very basic computer skills even thought they have been exposed to technology for a while now. I am trying to figure out how to expand their knowledge beyond googling or going to their email account. One of the ways, which I noticed was inspiring to them, is looking at the accomplishments of their peers. One of my students have sent me a screenshot of their progress of their own personal game that he is building during his free time at home. When I shared this with the class, they were all amazed that he can even do something like this, by himself, at home. I believe that this is a good start towards going deeper in technology and exploring all of its’ uses.
